Wilf Chappell

My art is best described as alternate process. ( there are many )

Photography is my starting place but is only a part of constructing my image.  I deconstruct photographs into pixel shapes which I use to build compositions; layering different images into an impressionistic whole.

I use photography as a means to an end, not the end itself.  The textures within each layer (image) seem to invite me to enter a realm just outside reality.

My final art pieces often have ten or more layers of material, digital and physical.  Often I am taken on a journey of discovery, contradictions between dream and reality, sometimes into darkness and unease.

Alternate process art allows photography to expand unconstrained by two-dimensional limits.

Is it art; is it describable ?   I think that for the viewer, if it creates an interest or an emotional response, the image is successful.
